Textbook Savings And Back to School Values
Do you look forward to going back to school, the nervousness, the excitement, and the tuition bill? While learning is fundamental, it can be quite costly.
If you have young adults who are going off to college this year don’t forget to include these top three related expenses. Account in your budgeting for boarding, tuition, and textbooks.
Hopefully you’re not just starting to save up for your child’s education. While tuition and boarding are fixed expenses which you don’t have much control over, textbooks are a different story. You may not be able to predict textbook prices, but you certainly can reduce them by following these three important tips:
Buy your textbooks used if at all possible. College campus bookstore knows that having used textbooks on hand will help keep them somewhat competitive against the online stores. The trick with textbook publishers is they update their books every year so that buying used textbook isn’t always feasible. It’ called planned obsolescence. They do this on purpose so they can sell more books for the next year but very little has been changed. I knew of one professor who encouraged students to pick up the “outdated” copies of the book since he knew the cost was outrageous. Most of the time very little information has been changed or added and the professor planned on referencing the textbook sparingly. Also, your student may also learn that some of the titles on the professor’s list are optional, not mandatory purchases so make sure to ask your professor’s before buying every textbook on the list.
Shopping online for your textbook versus your college bookstore has a major advantage and that is competitive pricing. Thanks to the internet today, websites have sprung up that sell both new and used textbooks at prices much lower than those found on campus. There are review websites that helps sellers sell their books and since they are being compared to another vendor, it creates lower pricing to win your business. Just be careful when shopping online to watch out for scams. Shop only with the websites that have clearly outlined the payment, shipping and handling, and return policies. You can also check auction sites too for additional savings.
Don’t forget to check the retail shops too. Big bookstore retailers such as Barnes & Noble and some of the office supply stores. They may carry the real popular ones. If not, your student can still purchase all of his or her school supplies off campus which can still save you big money in the process.
You don’t have to feel like your being “held hostage” by outrageous textbook prices anymore, you now have options. Teach your student to shop wisely so they can save on their textbooks and learn some real back to school values.
