Review Essentials of Statistics (3rd Edition) – Sale and Discount

Essentials of Statistics (3rd Edition) Reviewed

This book was specified for my introductory course in statistics at IPFW. From a well seasoned reader’s point of view, this book was very well written. When I write about a well-written textbook, I’m not just talking about how the information flows as you read. The text is written so that the reader can understand the concepts and follow along with the author’s thinking. All odd problems are answered in the back of the book. You couldn’t ask for a better statistics textbook. R. Glidewell – Fort Wayne, IN.

Author Should Take His Own Advice – Wanderling – Ohio
While this author has written a highly usable textbook, the means in which he accomplishes this his goals are questionable, and suggests a certain personal agenda. Having just reviewed some of the chapters in the book in preparation for assisting someone in a class which is utilizing the text, I was dismayed to see the author using examples from “real-life” without conveying the “real facts”. I was further troubled to note that several of these examples present a slanted bias towards certain liberal personal views, while treating the information presented as gospel. This leaves students with the impression that the facts presented are true, and thus provokes an emotion or belief on the part of the student.

The author routinely suggests that the student consider the source of the date provided, the validity of that data, and the means in which the data is analyzed and presented. All the while, the author leads students to reach a conclusion which is often emotional and/or faulty. As someone with a legal background, I found Chapter 5 particularly egregious. The facts presented are inaccurate, i.e.: 80% of the POPULATION were of a particular ethnic background, NOT 80% of the REGISTERED VOTERS from which a jury pool could be drawn from; the case was primarily decided on an error made by the state (failure to employ or present), rather than won on the statistics presented; the case presented does not take into account numerous statistical variables which would have influenced the composition of the pool; and, it fails to state that the case was from the early 1970’s (rather than a recent episode of social injustice, as implied).

My student was initially outraged at the idea of such “social injustice taking place in Texas”, as provoked by the author. However, when shown the actual facts of the case and the court decisions, their response was completely changed. This would suggest a social agenda on the part of the author. It is one thing to try to invoke passion for a subject in students. It is another to manipulate them. I would suggest that the author revisit some of his case presentations and remove references to specific “real-life” events, and offer these scenarios as purely hypothetical.

Review Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics with SPSS Student Version 13.0 2nd Edition – Sale and Discount

Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics with SPSS Student Version 13.0 2nd Edition Reviewed

If you are a Stats major, this book is likely not for you. For everyone else, it is a great introduction to many of the statistical concepts needed to analyze data in a meaningful way. One of the greatest benefits of this book is the decision tree of wisdom, which helps develop an understanding of which tests you can use in which circumstances. That alone helped to demystify statistics for me. The explanations are clear, there are lots of examples, and the SPSS software is pretty decent too.

Highly recommended.

This text was received in perfect condition. No writing inside, arrived promptly and included a CD-rom. People who think they hate statistics are mean.

Review Statistics for Business and Economics: Methods and Applications (Fifth Edition) – Sale and Discount

Statistics for Business and Economics: Methods and Applications (Fifth Edition) Reviewed

An excellent review of the basic foundations of statistics with business applications. Does not contain the reams of computer output common in other texts. Nice real world examples. An intuitive approach with only moderate reliance on formulae. Good for classroom use or as a reference book for the business professional.

Excellent explanations and examples – David L. Charlesworth – Sugar Land, TX United States
I think Mansfield writes the most understandable textbooks available anywhere. This particular title was used in the MBA program at UF, and I have used it as a valuable desk reference ever since. I’ve also bought several copies through amazon (love the buy-it-used feature) and given them away to colleagues.

Excellent book for use in and out of the classroom. – –
An excellent survey of statistics. Prepares a student well for more specialized courses. Includes plenty of examples from economics, business and operations research. The textbook is also a great resource for the professional who needs to understand and apply statistics beyond an elementary level.

Review Introduction to the Theory of Statistics 3rd Edition – Sale and Discount

Introduction to the Theory of Statistics 3rd Edition Reviewed

If I would be required to describe this book (I refer to the 1974 edition) I would describe it as ‘insightful’. Instead of just providing a comprehensive overwies of mathematical statistics (which accomplished the book by the way) it provides interpretations and explanations why definitions are introduces, theorems are stated, certain concepts are needed. As such it is definetely no cook book but allows you to gain deep insights into the (certainly non-trivial) matter.

The type setting is fine considered the fact it is quite old. I wish there would be a new edition just to make sure that this book we be available for all how want to learn from it.

There are many book available on this topic (mathematical statistics) however this one is especially well suited as a first book. Many other book are way more demanding and or explain the concepts to a lesser degreen than a beginner may need.

In my opinion this is really a great book that makes joy reading. Great job!

Much better than the usual alternative – Steve M. – Derwood, MD, USA
I bought this on a friend’s recommendation as an alternative to the Hogg, Craig text. The discussions are more complete in this book, and most of the examples are accompanied by more explanation. Worth getting if you have an undergraduate mathematical statistics or graduate econometrics class.

There is a 3rd edition solution manual!! – Shane Sanders – Manhattan, KS
I was looking through an old file cabinet in my office and found the solution manual for the 3rd edition of Mood, Graybill, and Boes. It was apparently put together by Boes and published by McGraw-Hill. It is fifty pages long and answers a lot (but not all) of the questions. Perhaps those who have expressed an interest in the manual should contact McGraw-Hill. Take care.

A beautiful text – –
A beautiful text of mainstream statistics, starting from scratch and taking you clearly to a good standard. If it provided answers to exercises, it would be perfect for self-study. Nevertheless, still amazingly clear without sacrificing the rigour and precision of the maths.
This must be the first book for anyone who wants to take on probability and statistics seriously.
