Matrix Algebra Useful for Statistics (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) Reviewed

This book covers a lot of materials that will contribute to a solid understanding of matrix algebra. I would, by all means, recommend this book, but would still like to point out some weaknesses:

1. Unattractive page layout. Page after page of dull looks. Need more visuals; I don’t mean colorful graphics but black-and-white diagrams and geometric interpretations.

2. From time to time, I felt like the author would give examples only on easy-to-understand topics, but avoid giving examples on difficult-to-understand ones. That didn’t make sense to me.

3. Proofs should be more clearly presented. It seems like the author is always in a hurry to just get the job done. I guess it was designed for uninterested readers to simply skip the proofs without making them feel they have skipped over a lot of materials. However, for an interested reader like me, who isn’t particularly strong in proofs, it was a disfavor.

4. Illustration topics could be more diverse. For instance, there are too many illustrations dealing with genetics. I would appreciate more everyday examples, like the taxi one.

Again, I would strongly recommend this book, despite what I think are its weaknesses.

Well-organized presentation of matrix algebra – Jeff Laufenberg – Chapel Hill NC
I’m methodically working through ALL the example problems in this textbook with the goal of firming up my understanding of matrix algebra and -ultimately- statistics. Currently on chapter 3 but I’ve been impressed thus far with the clarity of explanations and organization of the material. As a statistician myself, I’m certain this will be a valuable reference and resource for me in my work.

Definitively a classic – Dr. Luis A. Apiolaza – Christchurch, New Zealand
This is an excellent introductory book, although mostly oriented to people with a reasonably good mathematical background. Searle covers most, if not all, the matrix algebra that you may need to fully understand applications of mixed linear models. Chapters one to eight cover the essential operations (addition, multiplication, determinants, etc) as well as more advanced concepts (rank, canonical forms, inverse, etc). The rest of the book (chapters nine to fifteen) covers applications to statistics as well as advanced topics that can help you to understand how do some of the statistical packages work inside. The only mathematics book that I have read from cover to cover. Definitively a classic.

is what you get when you (pay for) the digital copy and want to use your (secret number of) copy privileges. Your print privileges – to print out the page – are limited as well and you do not know ahead of time what that limit is. It seems to be 0. Which should not be sold as a print privilege. The annotations come out in this same weird encoding and the “Report a Problem” link has been irritating me since I first tried April 17 when I purchased this article. I wanted to report that the text is dim and fuzzy, very difficult for reading online, so I filled out the “Report a problem” form. I spent time filling it out. The response was that “We know this doesn’t work and we are working on it and try again later”. That was April 17. Still happening. There is no place to rate the digital service.

I gave up and wrote regular Amazon customer service.
Amazon customer service refunded the price of the digital subscription.

Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics: An Introduction (Statistics for Biology and Health) Overview

Advances in computers and biotechnology have had an immense impact on the biomedical fields, with broad consequences for humanity. Correspondingly, new areas of probability and statistics are being developed specifically to meet the needs of this area. There is now a necessity for a text that introduces probability and statistics in the bioinformatics context. This book also describes some of the main statistical applications in the field, including BLAST, gene finding, and evolutionary inference, much of which has not yet been summarized in an introductory textbook format. This book grew out of a need to teach bioinformatics to graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. At the same time however, it is organized to appeal to a wider audience. In particular it should appeal to any biologist or computer scientist who wants to know more about the statistical methods of the field, as well as to a trained statistician who wishes to become involved in bioinformatics. The earlier chapters introduce the concepts of probability and statistics at an elementary level, and will be accessible to students who have only had introductory calculus and linear algebra. Later chapters are immediately accessible to the trained statistician. Only a basic understanding of biological concepts is assumed, and all concepts are explained when used or can be understood from the context. Several chapters contain material independent of that in other chapters, so that the reader interested in certain areas can proceed directly to those areas. Warren Ewens is Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of two books, Population Genetics and Mathematical Population Genetics, and has served on the editorial boards of Theoretical Population Biology, GENETICS, Proceeding of the Royal Society B and SIAM Journal in Mathematical Biology. He was recently awarded the Gold Medal of the Australian Statistical Society and elected as Fellow of the Royal Society. His research interests are in evolutionary population genetics, linkage analysis for human diseases, and bioinformatics. Gregory Grant is a bioinformatics researcher at the University of Pennsylvania in the Computational Biology and Informatics Laboratory (CBIL), where he has been since 1998. In 1995 he received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland and in 1999 a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are in bioinformatics in general and in particular in the statistical analysis of gene expression data and significance testing methods for IBD-mapping.

A good read, but only if you have adequate probability and statistics background – TFKhang –
This is a useful book for people who have some background in probability and statistics to understand methods in bioinformatics. The chapter on BLAST theory is useful, as not too many books talk about it. Newcomers into the field who have absolutely no math background may find it hard to understand, though – definitely not a book for the beginner.

I’m a Statistics PhD student so you can condition on my prior to get at what’s really going on with this book.

Bioinformatics is a departure from “regular” statistics and looks awfully messy at first pass. The sorts of assumptions one typically makes in other areas of statistical inference are patently false, so new techniques and intuitions have to be built up in order to attack these kinds of problems. This book does an excellent job of balancing the technical details with the necessary intuitions so one can really get a firm grasp on what’s going on.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who hasn’t done statistics at at least an advanced undergrad level (e.g., comfortable with Probability at the Ross-level and Statistical Inference at the Casella/Berger-level). But for people really interested in the material and coming from a solid statistical background the book is an excellent resource.

I would also strongly recommend it to teach out of.

Most Elegant Account of Bioinformatics – RandomThoughts – DC
I was impressed with the 1st edition of this book for its most comprehensive and elegant of statistical techniques in bioinformatics. The book is slightly below the level of the now classic M S Waterman (1995)book:Introduction to Computational Biology: Maps, Sequences and Genomes (Interdisciplinary Statistics). But this book is more update in some areas and has much more background materials on probability and statistics, which should provide a solid basis for understanding bioinformatics. Its pedagorical sense is unparalleled. It would make a very good choice for a stat/math oriented introduction to bioinformatics (as opposed to algorithimc/database oriented approach in cs).

Excellent Coverage of the History of Statistics Before 1900 – Suppiluliuma – Chicago, IL
This is an outstanding book. As a Statistics student, I can’t imagine reading anything better on this subject. The math in the book is in-depth enough such that I can relate historical developments of various statistical theory and technique to what I have done (and, for that matter, that which I have yet to do) and it was possible to reproduce some of the calculations on my own (which was quite enjoyable). Overall, this is an excellent book–I can’t recommend it enough.

Statistics and Its History – Michael Albert –
Excellent book. To me, this book is not simply an exposition of the history of statistics, but a way to understand statistics better via the challenges which historically motivated its development. The writing is clear, precise, and insightful.

Stigler is unrivaled as a statistician who researches the history of statistics. This covers the famous mathematicians and statisticians who developed the foundation on which probability and statistics blossomed in the 20th Century. He is thorough and accurate and his writing is always clear and interesting. After reading this try Salsburg’s “Lady Tasting Tea” to see how Fisher, Cramer, Neyman and Pearson and Kolmogorov and others formally developed probabilty and mathematical statistics as important disciplines in the 20th Century.

Always enjoyable and enlightening, Stigler brings an unparalleled degree of scholarship to the essays.

I used this book as a supplement to a crash course in Statistics for Graduate School. It is very good, but it can be a little skimpy on complete explaination of all the variables in an equation.

One good feature of the text is that the next chapter builds on the previous. The complexity of the various statistical equations grows gradually. This is helpful in may respects, but the writer(s) assume that the reader has an EXCEPTIONAL memory and can readily recall details from 1, 2, or 3 chapters back which apply to the current text. I found myself going back and re-reading previous chapters to get a handle on the chapter I was actualy reading.

Overall, the book is good but on one should try to use it as their sole book on business statistics.

I used this book for an undergrad economic stats course. The book is not based on technical concepts, that is to say, not all about the numbers. The book uses storylines to explain the statistics concepts. The exercises are helpful as well. One thing to note though, the text uses minitab extensively in the regression chapters etc when the book came with “kaddstat” for excel. Overall, I would say this book is best for those who do not enjoy reading technical mathematics (focusing on forumulas, etc). This book is more for those who are always asking “why am I learning this”…”what is the real world application of this stuff? “

The former talk in general terms about many important statistical tests, for univariate and multivariate distributions. Yet to someone outside SAS, who might be a student or professional statistician, knowing in general is often little help in being able to do specific tests in SAS. So O’Rouke wrote what you might think of as a standard text. Except that it is firmly grounded in showing how all this can be done in SAS. It is also suitable as a first text in those tests. In fact, maybe even better than standard texts. Because this book gives you the tools to familiarise yourself with easily running those tests against data sets. Typically, the other books leave you with two things to do. Write those tests (or get software from someone), and apply these against data.

This book allowed me to learn statistics and using SAS to do statistics without being overwhelmed. I particularly like the thorough, easy-to-follow explanations that accompany SAS outputs, i.e. the authors explain each section of the lengthy output well. What use is it if you get a bunch of output but don’t know how to interpret? The authors try to help you with that, and I would say they are successful.

Sometimes I felt that certain sections are too step-by-step (like detailing the romance study at great depth), but I guess readers can gain some exposure to study designs by going through those paragraphs.

This book was specified for my introductory course in statistics at IPFW. From a well seasoned reader’s point of view, this book was very well written. Author Should Take His Own Advice – Wanderling – Ohio
While this author has written a highly usable textbook, the means in which he accomplishes this his goals are questionable, and suggests a certain personal agenda. Having just reviewed some of the chapters in the book in preparation for assisting someone in a class which is utilizing the text, I was dismayed to see the author using examples from “real-life” without conveying the “real facts”. I was further troubled to note that several of these examples present a slanted bias towards certain liberal personal views, while treating the information presented as gospel. This leaves students with the impression that the facts presented are true, and thus provokes an emotion or belief on the part of the student.

The author routinely suggests that the student consider the source of the date provided, the validity of that data, and the means in which the data is analyzed and presented. All the while, the author leads students to reach a conclusion which is often emotional and/or faulty. As someone with a legal background, I found Chapter 5 particularly egregious. The facts presented are inaccurate, i.e.: 80% of the POPULATION were of a particular ethnic background, NOT 80% of the REGISTERED VOTERS from which a jury pool could be drawn from; the case was primarily decided on an error made by the state (failure to employ or present), rather than won on the statistics presented; the case presented does not take into account numerous statistical variables which would have influenced the composition of the pool; and, it fails to state that the case was from the early 1970’s (rather than a recent episode of social injustice, as implied).

My student was initially outraged at the idea of such “social injustice taking place in Texas”, as provoked by the author. However, when shown the actual facts of the case and the court decisions, their response was completely changed. This would suggest a social agenda on the part of the author. It is one thing to try to invoke passion for a subject in students. It is another to manipulate them. I would suggest that the author revisit some of his case presentations and remove references to specific “real-life” events, and offer these scenarios as purely hypothetical.

Managing and Using Information Systems: A Strategic Approach (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) Reviewed

I read this book during a MCIS class. This book is very well written for those looking for abroad overview of topics. This will cover many different topics including one chapter on financials. For me this book happened to recap a lot previous courses which I have taken. I enjoyed this because it made me recall those ideas and realize that those other authors are sharing the same thoughts about many disparate subjects and topics.

The companion website for students was very help during my studies. They included a powerpoint slide per chapter which broke down the learning objects, the key points in each chapter’s sub-heading, as well as a summary of the chapter in the end. They also included additional notes and resources for more in depth review of the chapter in discussion which my professor did not use but other may use I am sure.

I would recommend this book for those wanting a board overview of the current state of many things an IT manager must take into consideration. If your looking for in-depth coverage on a specific topic you might do better looking elsewhere.
