love it!

I love this machine! Light weight and more stitches a novice sewer, like myself, will ever need. Now if i just had the time to try all the stitches and embroidery.
My only complaints are that it does not handle layers of fabric well, even with a denim needle. I found if I put it on the lowest sewing speed it does much better. But I still sometimes get the Error message. The monogramming function is less then what I expected. The letters are small and too boxy.
The computerized stitching makes changing stitches a snap, and I have actually changed stitches while sewing the same project with no problems. It even tells you what foot you should be using, and automatically sets the width, and length. Or you can do it manually. The tension has yet to be a problem, it is easy to adjust. And the auto needle threader is great, once you get the knack of using it.
The XR9000 is great for a beginner like myself. The price for a refurbished one was within my budget, but If you can afford a new one in the box, go for it.
I wanted an embroidery machine originally, but they are so pricey. With the embroidery foot ,purchased separately, and a little practice, I think I’ll be OK! Maybe I’ll be able afford the Project Runway machine one day, the XR9000 is all the machine I need right now.

TERRIBLE!

I bought this machine from a different site in February and with the snow I got it in March. Well by the second week it stopped working. The bobbion thread gets all tangles and locks up the motor. I called Brother and they were ZERO help. The worst part is that the machine broke in the middle of makign a crib set for my niece who will be born before my replacement arrives

A couple of issues….

I loved this machine at first. It was smooth, quiet, and I love the speed control for applique.
My issues are:
Straight line sewing seems to be a slight problem. I have to fight a little to keep my fabrics feeding thru straight. It doesn’t matter which feet I use, I change feet, thread, and needles according to what the manual says for whatever I’m sewing. If I wear my quilting gloves for regular straight sewing it’s a little easier. But I never had to do that with my old machine.
My second issue is skipped stitches. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago, and I have done everything the manual suggested. I have cleaned the bobbin case (it was pretty dusty), I have made sure my needle is inserted properly and the machine is threaded properly. I make sure I have the right needle, foot, etc for what I’m sewing. It still skips stitches, even on my applique now.
Today I am going back to my old singer. I live in the boonies and it is a full day to drive to and from a place that can service my machine. I am going to call brother customer service and hope they will be able to help, but I do not want to pay expensive shipping or repair charges for an inexpensive machine like this. I may end up donating it to my trash can and buying the more expensive machine I wanted in the first place.
Bummer!

Wish I had bought a new one

I love this machine. The little lettering you can embroider with it, the lovely fancy stitches. It is easy to thread and sews well and I bought mine refurbished for $149 and it was false economy. For refurbished read used. The table I got with mine did not fit, the cover was filthy, non of the extras were included, the quilting foot, the 1/4 inch foot, the walking foot, the quilting guide or the eyelet punch. I have bought the extra feet which pushes up the price to $199. Walmart is selling this same machine but under the model number of SQ9000 with the front a pretty pink instead of blue and for $199 plus tax which makes it around $210. Less than $20 more but I would have had a perfect brand new machine and registered with Brother. Never again will I buy a ‘refurbished’ model even though I did finally get a replacement table and I cleaned the filthy cover.

Ok for light sewing, but not a good machine for avid sewer/quilter

I’ve purchased two of these. The first one I had came with a defect. It wouldn’t sew straight. The presser foot and feed dogs kept pulling the fabric through at a severe angle. I confirmed that it wasn’t just something I was doing wrong by reading through the manual and checking with my local sewing and vacuum shop. I exchanged it and got the same model. I figured I just got a bad one and wanted to give it another try due to good ratings. Unfortunatley, I’m returning my 2nd one tonight and do not plan on buying another lower-end Brother machine. I decided to take up quilting and have been working on my first quilt. My second machine was just fine for a couple of small projects I did, but once I put the walking foot on and went to my quilting, something went wrong. Something with the upper thread tension broke, and now it doesn’t matter whether I’m sewing a quilt or on one layer a fabric. I’ve tried putting it on every number (0 through 9), and this seems to have no affect. The top thread is so loose, I can pull it out after sewing and loops from the bottom thread come up through the top. I’ve been through the manual and tried everything. I’ve changed my needle, my thread, rethreaded multiple times, etc. Nothing seems to work. So I’ll be returning this and I’m planning to spend the extra few hundred dollars to buy a Juki machine instead.

My conclusion:
This is probably a fine little machine for the price if you’re a light sewer. I’m not. I do a lot of home decor type sewing, bunting, and various other home projects. I’ve just started quilting, and I think that’s where I went wrong. Even though it comes with the necessary features to quilt, I don’t think it’s made for that kind of a project. I don’t think this would do well with any heavy-duty project (upholstery, denim, leather, quilting, etc). So if you’re looking to do some of those bigger projects, save yourself the time and spend a little more to get a sturdier machine.

Great intermediate machine

The XR9000 is very lightweight, I don’t know if that makes it less robust or not- it seems pretty sturdy but I would not use it for leather. The sewing mechanism is wonderful- very quiet and soft, like cutting through butter. Foot pedal is responsive and the speed limit slider works great. There’s also a button control but for whatever weird reason you can not use the start/stop button while the pedal is plugged in; I don’t foresee that button getting a lot of use.
There’s a reverse/reinforce button which unfortunately is a temporary switch only- not a toggle. It can be used in conjunction with the foot pedal or you just hold the button down and it will go in reverse at a slow speed.

Several extra presser feet are included, e.g. buttonhole, buttonstitch, zipper, blind hem. The one thing I am missing is a quilting guide. There’s a slot for it in the foot but it has to be purchased separately. While the accessories are fine, the accessory storage is not. There’s a front panel section that you have to pull out and then inside there’s a plastic pouch with all the goodies. You have to keep the stuff in the pouch or they’ll fall out of the machine. For $0.20 more Brother could have added a proper compartment with a hinge- instead they took a very cheap and impractical storage approach.

Lighting is provided by a bright but focussed white LED. I am somewhat spoiled by having a high wattage light bulb in the previous machine which lit up the entire working area. The XR9000 LED lights up the presser foot really well but that’s about it. The “automatic needle threading” is not automatic, but still extremely useful (I keep missing the eye when trying to do it manually).

Even though I wound 3 bobbins I still can’t tell whether the machine has an automatic stopping mechanism or just slows down a lot once the bobbin is full. Either way you can run the winding at full speed for a minute and it’s quite noticeable once it’s complete. The bobbins are full-size and top-loading. There’s a somewhat tricky part about catching a hook when loading the bobbin which is not well explained in the manual. The first time I missed that which resulted in unbalanced stitches; reloading the bobbin more carefully took care of it. Another nice feature is that you don’t have to pull up the lower thread before you can start to sew.

The stitch patterns are plentiful and half of them look quite nice. The other half has weird default settings where the default stitch length is too long, you can adjust that in the display but it still strikes me as odd. The monogramming feature works- it’s fixed size, fixed font and does not look all that great. The XR9000 does not have any adjustable settings for presser foot height or pressure. However, the included default presser foot has some kind of spring adjustment built in which is supposed to help with thick fabric layers. I have not had a chance to try it out yet. The manual and instructional DVD are great and cover all the essentials.

EDIT- 2 months later: I have been having problems with thin fabric veering off to the side which made it impossible to do blind hems or other straight stitches with tight tolerances. For 2 months I thought this was me using it wrong until I brought it to a local store. As it turns out the machine shipped with some defects- the shank was slightly angled and the feed dog timing was off. Repair was $60 and came with a warning by the mechanic that the Brother machines are not particulaly reliable due to lack of solid metal construction. Machine loses 1 star for this and the fact that Brother does not have many authorized service centers.

Amazing little machine for the price

I have been sewing for nearly 50 years and had not bought a new machine for almost 30 years. That one cost me, even then, three times what this one did and it can’t do a fraction of the functions of this or as well. What impresses me the most is the even sewing on both sides of the fabric, that it can go over thick spots such as seam junctions without skipping stitches, and the array of buttonholes it can make. It can also take the specialty threads on the market — thick and thin — without shredding or skipping. It does have a few drawbacks, however. As another reviewer said, it has a low shank so it is hard to start sewing in a thick area without dropping the feed dogs. It also has a long needle screw which protrudes out far enough into the bed that it is easy to whack your finger when the machine is running if you have to hold something close to the presser foot. The bed is not very long so sewing large or thick items such as draperies or upholstery is difficult to get through the opening. It also does not have a right needle position, but the ability to select a starting position (left or center), or up or down, is very nice and easy to change with different applications. The User Manual is very complete and has a good index. Brother Xr9000 Computerized Sewing Machine, Which Offers 80 Built-in Utility(xr-9000)

Great machine with lots of extras

I’ve used this machine to make lots of crafts and a full sized log cabin quilt with stippling. The top drop bobbin is easy to thread and the bobbin winder is simple to use. The extra feet and longer arm quilting table are wonderful extras. The font is nothing amazing but works nice for simple monogramming. I like that you can drop the feed dogs and free motion quilt. It is a low shank machine and I was able to get a generic walking foot for it. The backlit lcd screen is very nice and easy to read – not too dim or too small. The best feature though is the automatic start/stop, needle up/down, and reverse stitch buttons. I haven’t even used the foot pedal!

it really pays to get a nicer one even for a beginner unless you don’t mind upgrading after about one year

I got this machine a year ago as a beginning sewer. I really loved it and was able to learn and make many things with it. I discovered and confirmed that sewing was going to be my ‘thing’. I did not want my husband buying anything too expensive or fancy just in case I ended up not liking to sew.
Its a basic model and I don’t need all of the fancy extras anyway. But now a year later, as my sewing confidence is growing and I am moving on to try new things, the machine stopped working right. There is some sort of problem with the thread. Its not the tension, I have tried everything. We have oiled and dusted it, changed thread, bobbins and fabric. The manual is terrible and not very helpful. The machine still runs but after a few stitches, the thread either breaks or comes out.
It may be a simple problem to fix but not something we can figure out. Since my husband got it for so cheap (and even on sale) he decided to get me a new one instead of paying to have this machine repaired.
We got a Husqvarna Emerald for $299. (a basic model) There is no comparison in how it runs its sturdier and even though its a basic model it has many nice extra features and the manual is great.
Having said that, there is no way that one year ago I’d have wanted a $300 machine not knowing if I would like sewing or not.
The Brother worked great and was easy to learn on, I just think it should have lasted longer than a year. 3 Months ago I probably would have given this 5 stars. Thats how happy I was with it until I started having these frustrating problems. (and an added note…a Husqvarna never needs oiling! How about that?)

Still on the bubble

I’ve had this machine for a week now, and am still trying to decide whether to return it. I got it set up and working quite easily, including the tension adjustment that bothers some people. I’ve got two problems:

1) If I try to begin sewing near the edge of the fabric, or begin further in and backstitch to the edge, it sucks the fabric down and chews it up. I’m doing piecework so I need to be able to sew to the edge!

2) Posted a question to Singer’s website about instructions for the quilting attachments; no response in a week. Doesn’t give me confidence in their customer service. (Edited to add– Singer responded to my question soon after I posted this, after more than a week. So either customer service is slow, or Amazon reviews are a better way to contact them!)

Awful machine!

I bought this machine in January at a B&M store. I didn’t do any research because I just wanted a basic machine and had read good reviews for Brother machines. This weekend I finally needed to use it to recover 5 cushions. What should have taken a couple of hours used up a whole weekend causing headaches and much cursing. I had to finish the project so I continued to deal with the bobbin clogging up, thread tangling in the upper mechanism, huge knots on the bottom of my fabric. I finished this morning hand sewing the final two seams. It’s too late to take it back; I’ve learned a lesson here. It’s going in the trash with less than 20 hours on it. My hb said to sell it or give it away, how could I do that knowing what a piece of trash it is?

The machine couldn’t even sew a simple straight seam!

I just returned my Brother VX-1435 after two days of struggling, trying to get it to work. I’ve done plenty of sewing on other machines, but thought that since I don’t use a lot of fancy features, I might as well get a basic machine. What a mistake!

The machine wouldn’t even sew a simple, straight-line stitch without skipping a stitch every so often – at least one every few inches, and at least once per seam it just quit sewing stitches at all and left you with two long strings of dangling thread. I tried everything to get it to pick up the bobbin thread – took out the bobbin case (an unnecessarily complicated setup, compared to any other machine I’ve used), re-threading the top thread, adjusting the tension (there’s only one tension knob for both top and bottom) – I even took out the whole bobbin mechanism, following the steps in the manual, to check it. No luck at all.

The instruction booklet says to call the company before taking the machine back to the store. I don’t see the point, since they spent more time asking for phone, mailing address, e-mail, and fax (fax?) information than they did telling me to do what it said on the troubleshooting sheet. NO help at all, and the woman on the phone sounded like she’d never heard of this problem. I took it back to the store and spent the extra money to buy a machine from another manufacturer.

Beginner’s Best Friend!

I had no practical experience with a sewing machine and though I was eager to try my hand at it, it always intimidated me. This was my first machine, bought for me by my sweet husband. It is truly very easy but, at the same time, it comes with some really cool accessories that would cost a lot if bought separately! I wish it came with better explanations of all the additional feet but at this price it’s still very impressive, especially for beginners.

Singer confidence quilter

I have had this machine for a year. Most of the sewing I have done on this machine is quilt piecing, general sewing, and some quilting. One feature that no one has mentioned (as far as I recall) is a special feature that in piecing quilts has saved me much time in piecing. As you begin your seam the machine sews a few stitches and backs up over them, securing the beginning of the seam. When you finish the seam, hit the reverse arrow and it secures the last stitches of the seam in the same way.

The stitches are consistently straight. It also comes with an attachable walking foot. The throat plate of the machine is clear making it visible to see if you are running out of thread.

There are better sewing machines of this type but the price ranges begin somewhere at $1,000. With all the “bells and whistles” this machine has, I would highly recommend it.

I liked it until it broke after less than a year of light use

I can’t get the tension to work and I’m in the middle of sewing gifts for mother’s day, great. I liked it ok but, now I’m irritated. Look for a better beginner machine unless the deal is SOOOOOO good you can’t refuse it. I bought mine for $40 on sale. In retrospect, it was worth it but, now I need a new machine.

This is a GREAT machine

I got this machine at a great price at Joann Fabrics. What is great about it is it comes with the extended table which is shown in the pictures, the walking foot, which is pretty expensive to buy separately, the 1/4 inch foot, and other quilting accessories, as well as multiple other snap on feet.

I got home, took it out of the box, popped the DVD which comes with the machine into my computer to see how to thread the bobbin (very simple), thread the needle (can be tricky) before I did any damage to the machine! I did both just fine.

This sewing machine is very quiet compared to my Huskystar 215. I tried out some of the stitched by simply touching the up and down buttons. Everything else adjusts automatically. There is a small pull out tray under the right side that pulls out with all of the stitches listed on it which is very convenient.

I like the automatic needle threader, drop in bobbin, and needle up/down features myself. You don’t realize what you don’t have until you do have it, I guess!

Good for beginners

I have quilted for years on an old 90’s Singer and decided to finally move into the 21st Century. Of course the reason I never upgraded was cause I was broke so I thought I would try out the Singer 7469Q – I got it at Jo-Ann’s which has a 10 day return!

I used this machine to quilt a queen sized wedding chain quilt. I plan on returning it. I have been wanting to upgrade from my early 90’s Singer and wanted to check out this one. It feels cheap – for ex. the thread holder is thin flimsy plastic. The LED light is incredibly dim – you need a desk lamp. Also, the stiches don’t get very long — my old Singer you could get long basting stitches which is nice.

It’s fussy about the thread – you have to have it threaded just right or it goes nuts – I never had this problem before either.

It does pretty well with free motion quilting — a little jerky but after an hour or so I had gotten used to it and could do some attractive stitching.

Over all, I think this is a GREAT machine for a beginners – it has all the extras so you can experiment with what feet you like to use, etc. and learn about it. BUT the feet are flimsy. It’s not a work horse like my old machine.

I would say, if you make more than 2 quilts a year, upgrade. If you just want to make a few baby quilts, this is a great economical option for you, it would probably last great under light use — I use mine so much I”m worried about breaking it and am going to suck it up and pay a bunch of money for a nicer machine.
